“In creating Isleta I thought a lot about the experience of feeling a strong emotion more than recreating a specific memory. I wanted to evoke the brevity and intense beauty of summer – something vivid but wholly without urgency. The brief also suggested so many dualities: cool air on warm skin, green shadows and wide-open spaces suffused with light, the permanence of memory and the temporality of seasons.
The fig note in Isleta is atmospheric – as though you’re amongst the trees – an effect I feel grounds the entire composition. Around the fig I composed layers that gently rise and fall away: the shimmer of citrus yielding to subtle whisps of tea and jasmine, a slow drift into this elegant, soft woodiness that feels effortless.
If anything, Isleta is an invitation to be present in every moment. Too often the world intrudes, and we forget to pause between doing one thing and the next to appreciate the beauty all around us.”
